LIVING
SOILS
The project proposes an innovative approach to sustainable construction, centered on harnessing the extraordinary potential of indigenous soil microbes. Inspired by the discovery of a local microbe in a scientist's garden, which yielded the strongest biocement to date, this initiative embarks on a journey to uncover the diverse capabilities of microbial communities. Notably, Kitasatospora setae, among others, demonstrates an enzyme that surpasses plant enzymes in converting carbon dioxide into carbon compounds.
While the project proposed extensive sampling, sequencing, and cultivation efforts, these aspects remain unexplored. Nonetheless, the initiative envisions a future where such microbial insights revolutionize construction practices, fostering a symbiotic relationship between architecture and the natural world, while prioritizing sustainability and innovation.
